Researchers at Siemens have created a new prototype electric motor specifically designed for aircraft that weighs in at just 50 kg (110 lb) and is claimed to produce about 260 kW (348 hp) at just 2,500 RPM. With a quoted power five times greater than any comparable powerplant, the new motor promises enough grunt to get aircraft with take-off weights of up to 1,800 kg (2 ton) off the ground.
As a result, the new aircraft electric drive system achieves a claimed weight-to-performance ratio of 5 kW per kilogram. This ratio is an exceptional figure – especially if compared to similarly powerful industrial electric motors used in heavy machinery that produce less than 1 kW per kilogram, or even to more efficient electric motors for vehicles that generate around 2 kW per kilogram. The four electric motors in the Solar Impulse 2, by comparison, produce just 7.5 kW (10 hp) each.
Researchers working at Siemens say that they have produced an electric aircraft engine wit...

Spaceship Could Carry First Humans to Mars in Hibernation State

Scientists are currently developing a way to send humans to Mars in a spaceship using therapeutic hypothermia.  Six to eight astronauts will undergo periods of therapeutic hypothermia treatments while in the spaceship to help the 180 day journey to Mars seem to go by faster.  Therapeutic hypothermia is a method used to put your body in an almost sleeping state, where your body temperature goes from 98.6 degrees to about 93 degrees.  Studies have shown that the humans will be fine physically be okay, but scientists are unsure of the mental affects therapetuic hypothermia will have on astronauts.  Also, another issue is that if Mars was to be colonized, we cannot just send 6 to 8 people at a time.  Specialists are working on solving these issues and working on getting humans to Mars in possibly about 20 years.

Engineer Izhar Gafni learned how to fold cardboard into the strongest shapes possible, including honeycombs and bird nests. The spokes, rims, and frame are made from cardboard; old car tires are used as puncture-proof wheels, a car's timing belt as a chain; and formed plastic bottles are made into pedal cranks. The prototype weighs 28 pounds, and can support a rider almost 20 times its weight. He intends to make four models, two for adults and two for children; rechargeable electric motors are optional. He hopes to sell them for $30 each, and build them for $12 each. If advertising were to be on each bike, then people in developing countries could ride them for free.
